HEROES Readers
Help Oakland students learn to read by becoming a HEROES Reader! The HEROES Readers Project helps prepare, guide, and support interested volunteers in their tutoring endeavors in the Oakland schools.
The HEROES Readers Project targets one-on-one reading tutors for elementary school students helping to ensure that students learn to read at an early age. This project prepares volunteers to enter the classroom with concrete skills and the confidence needed to assist students as they learn to read.
Training for this project is provided by Community Solutions Network. Through its Community Literacy Initiative, volunteer reading tutors are provided with a curriculum designed around the essential tools tutors need to be most effective.
Benefits
In addition to the joy of helping students learn to read, participants in the HEROES Readers Project receive: free in-depth trainings focused on reading strategies and philosophies; suggested reading tools and games for use in the classroom to assist struggling readers; free fingerprinting allowing volunteers to work with students without supervision; the preparation and confidence needed to be a successful and positive role model!
Commitments
Those involved in the HEROES Readers Project are asked to make a few commitments. We ask that volunteers: spend ten or more hours a month tutoring; attend all levels of the HEROES Readers trainings; go through the Oakland Unified School District's fingerprinting process (we'll arrange it for you and even pay!); and have an in-person meeting with the teacher before beginning.
