Oakland HEROES -- Helpers Engaged in Reaching Oakland's Excelling Schools

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the placement process take?

The length of time it takes for HEROES to place a volunteer varies greatly depending on volunteer motivation and area of interest. You must complete at least the TB test before HEROES can begin the placement process. It is helpful to attend the training/orientation before beginning in the classroom, but we don't want to slow down the process, so as long as you are signed up for the Orientation, we will go ahead with your placement.

Do I need to attend an Orientation?

The Orientation is required for those volunteers interested in working as classroom aides or tutors. The Orientation gives you a chance to let us know your expectations as a volunteer, and to learn more about our agency, the Oakland Unified School District, and school needs.

How long does my TB test last? Where can I get a TB test?

Volunteer TB tests are valid for one year. If a volunteer is an employee of the school district, their TB test is valid for four years. The District offers TB tests for $10 on Tuesday mornings from 9:30 - 11:30am. The District requires payment in the form of a money order and a valid form of ID. Call (510) 879-8816 and make an appointment with Veronica Richardson.

Do I have to be fingerprinted in order to volunteer? How do I get fingerprinted?

Unsupervised volunteers are required to be fingerprinted. For example: if a volunteer will be working one-on-one with a student outside of the classroom, fingerprinting is required. Contact HEROES for additional information if you believe you need to be fingerprinted.

Can I choose a school, grade and/or subject that I want to work with?

Yes, we will try and match you with a school and teacher that fit your needs.

What is the minimum and maximum number of hours that I can volunteer?

The minimum number of hours required is one hour per week, but most volunteers spend 3-4 hours per week in a school. There is no maximum number of hours.

I work from 9:00-5:00. When can I volunteer?

If you are unable to volunteer during work hours, we have many one-time volunteer opportunities such as Family Reading Nights, Dictionary Day, and Read Aloud Day. Contact HEROES for more information.

What should I do if I am unhappy with my placement or volunteer experience?

We always encourage our volunteers to try and work out any issues they have with their site supervisor. If this attempt is not successful, or you are not comfortable doing this, please contact HEROES and we will be happy to find you another placement that fits your needs.

What should I do if for some reason I have to stop volunteering my time?

If you have to stop volunteering your time, you should always inform your site supervisor and student(s) first. If you can give warning that is greatly appreciated and hopefully gives the student(s) a chance to adjust. In addition to informing your site, please contact HEROES so we can make the necessary changes to our records.
